For those of you who don't [yet] know me, my name is Christian
Wickham. I am 32, work in IT Management, who decided to
migrate
from London to Adelaide in June 2004.
Ann, my wife, met me in London when she moved in to a room
in a house that I was renting. Two years later we were
married,
and then 5 days before our first anniversary,
Thomas
was born. A few months before that, I had been made redundant from a job that
I really enjoyed, and so I was able to be with Ann all through the 27 hours
of labour. A few weeks after Thomas was born, I got a job in an IT management
role that was really good for me and I could got a lot of successful work done.
Then we decided to migrate to Adelaide, where Ann had been brought up. We applied
for my visa in February 2004, and had sold our house and moved over by June
2004. It was a big upheaval with me having to give up my great job and our relatively
new house, but we wanted the better lifestyle that Adelaide could offer.
I left behind my father, Terry, and my mother, Eleanor. My older brother, Nick, lives with Eleanor. I have left my best friend and best man Johnny behind - although as a leaving gift I introduced him a new girlfriend, Helen (unfortunately it only lasted a year). Other friends that I will miss are Oliver & Jo, Dave & Ah Yee, Charlotte, and all my work colleagues from Chordiant. But, that life is over now, and we have all moved to Adelaide.
Ann has left behind many cousins and their families, in Birmingham. Ann will also miss her work colleagues, including Maureen & Peter and Laura & Lorenzo - we just went to their wedding, and their first baby is due soon!
Ann's immediate family is here in Adelaide, South Australia. Ann's parents, Liam and Shirley live in Salisbury (30kms north of Adelaide Central Business District), and Ann's sister Linda lives with her husband Ashley and children Marie, Victoria and Brendan in Surrey Downs, 38kms north of the Adelaide CBD, only a 10 minute drive from Liam and Shirley.
Ann's best friend from school also lives here, Cathy lives with her daughter Julia, only a few minutes away. Also some of Ann's old work colleagues live here - and they are all very good people. So, when we were deciding which city to migrate to, Adelaide was the only choice. Sydney and Melbourne had more jobs for me, but the Adelaide pace of life and the people we know makes all the difference.
I originally started the
blog
as a way to communicate with all the people back in England - instead of writing
long emails telling them what has happened, I provided a location where people
could dip in and get news when they wanted to. It has been very popular with
our friends and family, who love reading about what has been happening here.
So now the blog has gone global, and is available to the world at large - I
hope you enjoy it.
The best place to start with the blog is at
the
beginning. Start with our migration from London to Adelaide.
