We thought that if we spread out our house moving over a
week, that we could be a bit more relaxed about it and not so tired - but we
were wrong. We are both totally shattered, and we have barely moved our stuff
out of the old house yet! I have been driving back and forwards between the
old house, the new house, and all the hardware and DIY shops. The family have
been so helpful in lending a hand here and there - it's great.
Thomas has been difficult - he has always been wanting to go outside or run
around when we are moving, and it's not very safe at the moment, so he has been
very upset about not being able to be with us.
I bought some of the tools for the house, spade, fork, pressure washer etc.
and now have a wheelbarrow from Linda and Ashley. Ann has been scrubbing and
cleaning the old house, and I have been cleaning everything like the air-conditioning
vents in the ceiling.
I got a great phone call early this morning from Johnny, Helen
and Oliver - my best friends that I left back in England. They had just been
out together and it was late at night, and it was early morning for me (luckily
I was up early to look after Thomas). I had a great chat, and caught up with
all their news, which was quite significant stories from all of them.
It's been almost exactly a year since Thomas was christened in England, and
that was the date that Johnny met Helen. They have had their ups and downs since
then, but they are still together, which is great because they are very well
suited to each other and deserve to be together.
It's terrible when relationships break down that really should stay together.
The problem is that we are never taught about the two most important things
in life that everyone does - relationships and childrearing. We really should
be taught at school or college all about how to keep a relationship going and
how to bring up a child - it would make the world a much better place.

Today is Anzac
Day. For all non-Australians, it
is an additional rememberence day for Australia
and New Zealand, specifically for the Gallipoli invasion of 1915. People wear
Rosemary in place of a Poppy, and it's a public holiday, with no shops opening
before midday.
Thomas got Christened on Anzac Day last year.
This morning Foxtel cancelled our cable TV for the move. The
problem is that we can't pick up the five normal TV channels because the TV
signal is so bad in our house. It's amazing when we have no TV to see how much
it impacts on our lives.
Ann was disappointed that she would miss the Australian X-Factor,
but I was secretly glad. But when we both realised that we may miss Desperate
Housewives, we had to take our own desperate measures and wired up the TV from
the bedroom into the lounge so that we could watch the program on a small TV
with bad signal.
So many boxes, so much shifting backwards and forwards, it's all a blur now.

We have had a very productive day today. We got the cable
TV connected in the new house (they installed a totally new cable and a new
phone extension too), and we managed to get most of our boxes in and ANn even
managed to do some unpacking in the kitchen. Brendan was with us in the afternoon
and he helped to unpack some of our non-refrigerated food, and helped with some
more cleaning.
The day's unpacking was hampered by the newly cleaned carpets. Having just been
professionally cleaned, the carpets were still wet and so we realised that if
anyone walked on the carpet with even slightly dirty shoes, the wet carpet would
soak up all the dirt - leaving clean shoes but a dirty carpet. Ann and I managed
to arrange a bucket-brigade with me unloading the car to the door and a barefoot
Ann taking the boxes through the house.
This morning I did my first trip to daycare with Thomas. Ann
has shown me the way before, and shown me what I need to do to 'check in' Thomas
for his stay. But this morning, Thomas was able to show me where I needed to
put his dummy and drink, and when he took me to the corner where all the children
have their bags in drawers, Thomas showed me where his bag goes. It looked like
Thomas was making a careful selection of the correct drawer, and I thought that
he was already able to recognise his name on the label - but Ann told me that
it's in the same place.
When I left Thomas, his bottom lip started shaking when I was going to leave,
so I stayed with him until he got comfortable. At least he was not crying and
trying to return home like he used to - he is starting to realise that he has
a good time during the day so the seperation in the morning is not a problem.

The Blog will be unavailable now for the next week, as we are moving house and so I will have no Internet access to put the changes up to the Internet.
