The tower to the left of the centre of the picture is a clock ball - similar to the ball in Greenwich. The Australians are keen to state that when it was built, the clock in this tower was more accurate than the clock at Greenwich - at 1pm every day, the black disk/ball drops, signalling the time to ships in St Vincent Sound. Nowadays, when it is not 1pm, the ships find out the time by looking at their watch. |
